WordPress powers millions of blogs and websites. Learn how to create your own with this powerful publishing platform. Staff author Morten Rand-Hendriksen will help you get the most out of the self-hosted version of WordPress and create feature-rich blogs and websites. Morten explains how to create and publish posts and pages; customize your site with themes, widgets, and custom menus; and extend WordPress even further with plugins. Even more, Morten will show how to get more readers with social media sharing and comments, and adjust the settings that keep your site safe and secure.

It is important that each instructor skim these modules and decide which would be most useful to them and their students. To help students acclimate to WordPress, you could use exercises like the ones below:

Homework:

Watch: Modules 1, 4, and 6 in “Wordpress Essential Training” (run time approx. 1 hr 15min) with Morten Rand-Hendriksen. To access this training, login in to Lynda.com using your ISU net id and password. On the homepage of Lynda.com, there is a search bar in the upper right-hand corner of the page. In this search bar, type in “WordPress Essential Training”–the first option should be the correct documentation video series.

ExerciseAs you watch the video, identify three skills that you know you will need know in order to effectively communicate in the electronic mode of communication using WordPress. Your homework should be between 200-300 words, submitted to the Week 13 Exercise Submission forum.
